This year's Datathon focused on Cognitive Assessment Tools, offering participants a unique opportunity to study diverse datasets and uncover the relationship between cognitive tests and data analysis possibilities.

Under the guidance of our senior scientist, Sarah Bauermeister, the Datathon presented participants the opportunity to explore cohort data on the DPUK Data Portal. Through inspiring sessions and invaluable insights from Sarah, attendees were engaged with the impactful research studies within the short timeframe.

The atmosphere throughout the event was enthusiastic, with every participant showing their engagement until the end.

There were three groups focusing on compelling topics that included sensory impairment and cognition, quality of life and carer/participant perspectives, and cognition/mental health relationships. They have reached out to Sarah, saying they would like to continue collaborating on their respective projects beyond the Datathon. Furthermore, a couple of attendees have made plans to meet the DPUK team at the upcoming AAIC (Alzheimer's Association International Conference).

The positive feedback received from participants reflects the resounding success of the Datathon with the enriching experience provided

We had a blast again this year at the Datathon held by DPUK! We focused on Cognitive Assessment Tools for dementia research, collaborating in multidisciplinary teams working on big data for a week straight. The talks from Dr Terry Quinn, from the University of Glasgow, Prof Brett Thombs, from McGill University and Prof Nele Demeyere from University of Oxford , truly encouraged us to devise our own studies swiftly and efficiently in the short Datathon window.
I am grateful for all the guidance by Prof Sarah Bauermeister in the supervised sessions. Her insightful direction was instrumental in directing us to deliver an impactful research study bringing in her vast expertise in the field. Her supportive nudge kept us accountable while being reassured of the right research direction without being overwhelmed with possibilities. - by Farzana F. - Data Scientist (Senior Officer) at Office for National Statistics

The Datathon did not only provide an environment for collaborative exploration of datasets but also brought a passion for research and innovation. Attendees left the event equipped with fresh perspectives, and the motivation to make significant contributions to the field of dementia research.

See you at Datathon 2024!
